Ray Kapper coached both basketball and football at his alma mater, St. Mary High School. Kapper returned to the field where he had earlier starred as a quarterback first, as an assistant to Harry Kidder before being named assistant head coach in 1959. He was an assistant head coach along with Ron Vargo on the 1961 football team that compiled a 9-0 record and won the state Class A championship. Under Kapper’s leadership, St. Mary gridders piled up a 78-10-3 record between 1959-1962.

When it was decided following the 1961 season that St. Mary would become an all-girls’ school, Kapper moved to St. Vincent where he served as a line coach under Eddie Wentz.
Coach Kapper will be remembered for his “straight from the shoulder advice on and off the field.”
